60+ Free Press Release Distribution Sites

I’ll be honest in that I have very little experience in using free sites. My PR agency for high-tech clients has always used a paid service. However, that costs upwards of $500 per release, and now that I am helping entrepreneurs and small businesses get PR, I am asked this question all the time:

“Where can I post a press release for free?”

Before I give you the answer (hint: there are a lot of sites), another question that should be answered is, “is it worth it?”

Well, it depends. If you post on just a few of the better sites, you will likely get picked up by the search engines like Google and Yahoo, and will rank even better if you know how to optimize your release with keywords.

Personally, I prefer to put together a customized media list and send press releases to individual reporters, especially the ones in the local city or niche we are targeting. If your press release is newsworthy, then putting it on a wire service is a great add-on that can bring you more attention from media, customers, potential employees and partners you would otherwise not be able to reach.

If you want to try out a free news release service, I’ve heard good things about:

www.PR.com
www.PRLog.com
www.pressrelease365.com (this one looks like they will charge you $24.95 but all new registrations get a $25 credit so really, it’s free)

Then, there is another school of thought that if you have the time and energy, you can post on as many sites as possible and get more sustained traffic and visibility to your site. If you’re so inclined, here is a list of over 60 free press release distribution sites, compiled by Press Release Point and they will even post to all those sites for you…for a modest fee. It kind of defeats the purpose of using free sites but for a few dollars, it could be worth saving your valuable time.

Note: I am not endorsing these sites, nor have I used most them. I am merely sharing this information in case you find it useful.

If you need help with what to do with this list, or are stuck on next steps, my ebook PR in Your Pajamas has practical tips to make use of the information in this chart. Check it out!

Thank you very much! Great list you compiled. I have used http://www.PressRelease365.com several times with great results.

  2. Todd Havens says:

    Thanks for the list!

Oddly enough, I have found that pr.com and prlog.org are the only two I use of late for free releases. You copied me! Or vice-versa. :)

They really help to round a web presence, although I wouldn’t lean on their reach for really important releases.

PRLog.org can be a little glitchy sometimes. They’re in Romania and my Time/Warner internet sometimes takes a couple of tries to “find” them.

  3. PR says:

You can also include our free press release website in that list of sites.

  8. Any chance this database is available as a download? Would love to be able to lay our all the info side by side in order to compare and contrast features/benefits/costs of all the different services. Thanks!

  9. Elena Verlee says:

Unfortunately it’s not available for download as the table was provided to me by one of the distribution sites. Thanks for checking out the post!

  10. Victoria says:

The site seems to be down – any idea where else we could get that list?

Just right click inside the box and select all, then copy. You should be able to paste to Excel or Word from there.

  12. Elena Verlee says:

    Thanks for that Khrys!

  13. Elena,
Thanks to your list! i just now submitted a Press release to press release point dot com. I had used PRlog before.

The prlog site design is much better, the top scrollig bar on pressreleasepoint -annoyed me like hell! They shd. remove that!

Other than that getting my choice of anchor text was wonderful!

    Thanks to you!

  14. Brittany says:

I’ve used PRNewswires service for press release distribution in the past, but I’m now working for a company that has a very small marketing budget and am in the process of looking into these free press release distribution sites. The question I have is how reputable these free distribution sites are? I’ve used PRNewswire because it’s very reputable and the releases go straight to the news rooms of the editorial teams. Where do these free services send the releases to? How do you know that the releases are getting in the right hands of credible journalists and bloggers?

  15. Elena says:

Hi Brittany, to be honest I think smaller companies are best off creating their own customized media lists. That way you know who you sent it to, when and who to follow up if needed. These days I suggest not relying on the wire services to get media interest, we are using it to increase SEO – if it’s posted online by the free distribution sites. Using a newswire can be really expensive (a typical release is about $500) but you can get your own list for about the same amount and you can use it over and over again and eventually build a highly targeted list. Hope that helps.

  16. Brittany says:

Actually that helps a lot. We’ve noticed that sending out releases can be extremely expensive, which is why I was looking into the free options. Do you think it’s difficult for small companies that don’t necessarily have a PR department to establish media connections to distribute the releases? I’d like to start my own media list, but don’t really have connections currently, so I’m not sure how they’ll look at me.

Thanks for your help! Oh, and if you have any other articles you’ve written that might answer my questions feel free to just rely with those.
    Thanks!

  17. Elena says:

Brittany – sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I’m just about to write a blog post on 2 Different Ways to Approach Media Relations which will be helpful to you, so it will be posted in the next day. Don’t worry about not having media connections – 99% of emails a reporter gets is from someone that he doesn’t know. What’s important is that you have a good story to tell and are persistent in reaching out. And do have a look around my blog, there’s a ton of resources, audios etc that will be helpful. When you’re ready for a customized media list prepared for you, we are happy to help as well.

    Hello Everyone,

I am going to send out a Press Release, and I am only most likely going to send just this one. So, I have no need for future services, and I could do a trial of a paid service if I could get the first release free.

However, I want to kind of ‘target’ my PR to certain news places, such as my local (Los Angeles) stations, and the LA Times, as well as the NYT and WSJ.

What I need to know, please: Is there a service where I can just go down a list of potential press release contacts, and just check a box next to the ones that I want to send? This would be most, most helpful.

I appreciate any help you can offer. Please email me at juanantoniod at gmail dot com. Thanks for your help!
