An Analog Master and Mind in a Digital World

Bill Schweber of EE Times Planet Analog HeadshotOur #FollowFriday worthy recommendation this week is Bill Schweber, site editor and print manager for EE Times’ Planet Analog.  Years ago, when I was looking for the analog guru at EE Times, the first few calls I made were to friends who understood analog technology.  The first person each mentioned was Bill. Then, I checked with media veterans and industry analyst friends. They also recommended the same guy – Bill Schweber, analog mastermind at EE Times.

Bill has written hundreds of opinion pieces (some have won industry awards) as well as in-depth design and application articles.  He is also an author of three engineering textbooks. Without a doubt, Bill’s background as an electrical engineer (BSEE/MSEE) at various technology companies and as EDN’s first analog-beat editor then executive editor has definitely honed his craft.  Read More→

Always uncovering the realities of technology business and baggage

Our #FollowFriday Worthy recommendation this week is James Temple, who writes the Dot.commentary column for the San Francisco Chronicle and SFGate.com.  On Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays you will always find something new out of James’ column to chew on. He usually comments on the controversial technology issues that affect us and while it IS a commentary, James’ view on technology and its sensitive issues that come along with it are always delivered in an informative manner.  He expresses angles on the selected topics of the day that urge you to think on things as you read through his exposés.

I learn something new and useful each time I visit his column. A month ago, he wrote something about getting serious about fake fees on phone bills. It made me start reading the bills in the mail more closely. Since then, I have managed to save a buck or two after going over my bill with the customer service rep on the vendor side. Likewise, as a “technology power consumer,” I found the article regarding flash cookies both fascinating and alarming, so much so that my use and browsing of the Internet has become more conscious and guarded.

If you are a businessperson or an entrepreneur, you will also find James’ column enlightening. He often discusses the many trends and shifts in the technology world, where business is heading and how technology is making our lives more complicated or even overly consumed.  Whatever it is, James will tap into these sensitive tech issues with a curious poke and dissect it for his readers to ponder on deeply.

James’s style comes from being a business reporter in the San Francisco Bay Area for over a decade.  He has covered advertising, banking, real estate and retail for the San Francisco Business Times, Contra Costa Times and Bloomberg.  He also writes about food and travel and occasionally produces video for SFGate.com.

James shared a personal side of him in our questionnaire which I found endearing (I also crack my knuckles!).

Here’s his take on things:

Laughs at: Modern Family and the Winklevi, for slightly different reasons.

Hopes: That journalism finds its financial footing in the digital age (given the choice, I’d prefer to be paid).

Thinks: That robots will soon take over … our hearts.

Reveals: I crack my knuckles. There I said it.

Is Inspired By: Clever writing, deep reporting and beautiful time-lapse photography.

Dream Coffee Date: Bill Bryson or Natalie Portman, for slightly different reasons.

Three times a week, you will get a smart dose of tech biz and controversy. Daily, you will find him on Twitter sharing information and definitely always a clever comment on things. (Even the article about the grandma downloading porn made me think twice about my WiFi connection!)

Follow James Temple on Twitter: @jtemple

A Green Force in Social Media

jacob-gordon-TwitterOur #FollowFriday recommendation this week is Jacob Gordon, social media expert, green-tech writer and blogger, and host of TreeHugger Radio.

Jacob interviews thought leaders, opinion influencers, and pioneers in the world of green technology, environment conservation and other areas of eco-consciousness. Listen to his radio series to discover people who are making provocative contributions in green advocacy. An example is Isabella Rosellini, who’s been making “Green Porno,” a series of short films about the sex life of bugs and other animals.

He also edits Treehugger.com’s series of guides on “How to Green Your Life,” bringing the conversation down to the level of lay people. The series covers greening all aspects of daily life, such as cars and transportation, eating, beauty and fashion, home design, school, travel, gift giving and celebrations.

Pennwell’s Hardcore Maven in the Semiconductor Manufacturing Industry

Debra VoglerOur #FollowFriday Worthy recommendation this week is Debra Vogler, one of Pennwell’s most interesting and colorful senior technical editors who edited four of its top high-tech books: Solid State Technology, Photovoltaics World, Advanced Packaging, and Small Times.

I say “interesting and colorful,” because each time I facilitate her interviews with any of our clients, I can’t get over two things. First is her technical depth and knowledge in the semiconductor manufacturing field, and second, her striking beauty that can easily throw off anyone’s stereotype of a semiconductor engineer.

Super Girl Tech/Web Junkie of @Mashable

Jenn Van GroveOur #FollowFriday-worthy recommendation this week is Jenn Van Grove — one of the most prolific reporters for top tech blog, Mashable.

We at PR in Your Pajamas have nicknamed her the Super-Girl Tech/Web Junkie of Mashable, because she writes an average of 3-8 blogs daily, depending on what’s hot that day.

This may sound quite a bit from one person but given the unbelievable number of daily blogs posted on the Internet, Jenn can definitely deliver truly informative news about social media, start-ups, mobile offerings, tech-gadgets, media, business, and marketing.

Keeping up with web information has become quite daunting. Missing blogs from your favorite writers in just one day can be detrimental to your work and life in this age.

That’s why we love Jenn. She’s got an insatiable drive and passion for anything about technology and the Web. This is what makes her one of the most interesting bloggers on the Internet today.

Recently, I found myself in the habit of checking out her headlines before I retire each day. She never fails to give me something useful to know and ponder on. Her wide range of business and consumer topics are helpful intel for end-users, entrepreneurs, developers, and executives, particularly those in PR searching for a good story angle for their clients.

This dynamo also has her personal blog, where she writes about her life in San Francisco. But that’s another ball of wax! Colorful might be an understatement, but it’s appropriate. Even at the pace she’s going, Jenn constantly engages with those who follow her on Twitter. We don’t know how she does it; that’s why she has earned the title, “Super Girl.”

Second Act MagazineThis week our #FollowFriday recommendation is Second Act Magazine. This is a unique website, which focuses on what every 40+ person goes through as they get into the second half of their lives.

Even at her age, she continues to initiate new business ventures that will expand her little empire – not a moment without full gusto.

Second Act’s editor and main tweeter is Donna Wares. Her inspirational drive and passion can be very contagious so hang tight!

I’m happy to introduce you to Liz Estrella-Basilio, who’ll be taking over the blog every Friday starting tomorrow. Liz is my San Francisco partner at Cross Border Communications. Together we work with start-up to multi-million dollar technology companies who want to get their story heard in traditional, digital and social media.

If you’re new to Twitter, you’ll see a ton of #FF or #FollowFriday tweets… on Fridays. This tweet meme is a way for you to share with your Twitter followers whose Twitter stream they should be looking at. It’s a fun way to participate on Twitter because:

  • You can give a shout-out to someone who has been helpful to you that week.
  • You can introduce yourself to influencers and get on their radar by recommending them. Everyone appreciates being acknowledged, even the A-listers.
  • By seeing who your Twitter friends and influencers are recommending, you can find new and interesting people you wouldn’t otherwise know about.

It’s all about building a community you want to hang around with. In short, it’s good PR!

I’m a Twitter newbie myself, but from the perspective of PR, I see a lot of mistakes being made on Twitter — especially when it comes to #FollowFriday.

To help you avoid those mistakes, here are some PR tips to take advantage of Twitter’s #FollowFriday:
