Mompreneurs, help Stop the Silence

One of the reasons for blogging, I believe, is so that anyone can have a voice and be able to make a difference in the world.

Whether you are a parent or not, I invite you to support the work of www.12for12k.org which is raising money for Stop the Silence – a nonprofit that focuses on the heartbreaking work of dealing with the sexual abuse of children.

sts
Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) in the US alone affects one-third of girls and one-sixth of boys by the time they are 18 years old. Although many countries have not yet conducted the research to identify the extent of CSA, we do know it is a worldwide pandemic and that prevalence rates have been identified as high as 60 percent in some places, and as low as 2 percent in others. As a mother, even 2% is too high, and something I cannot even bear to think about.

Unfortunately, most CSA is never reported (due to shame, fear, stigma, and other factors). Many suffer in silence for most of their lives and deal with severe depression and anxiety. We all privately or publicly know survivors who have not only survived, but thrived; it has taken work for them to get there.

Stop the Silence has a three part mission to stem this epidemic. They are committed to exposing and stoping child sexual abuse and help survivors heal worldwide. The charity’s overarching goals are to:

1) help stop child sexual abuse (CSA) and related forms of violence;

2) promote healing of victims and survivors;

3) celebrate the lives of those healed.

www.12for12k.org has made it their mission to raise money for this worthy cause during the month of February. I will support them and ask all Mompreneurs and anyone else who reads this blog to do the same. Even $10 can help.

Please join me, spread the word if you have a blog or by email, and make a difference in the life of a child.

My First 7 Days on Twitter

twitter_11Since getting back to work after taking time off for baby #2, I’ve decided to start exploring social networking sites. With 2 young boys, 3 businesses, and now living in 2 countries, I really had my hands full and was wondering if it’s all a waste of time.

However, it’s hard to ignore the numbers. Twitter apparently grew by 974% last year, which is just astounding.

So, if you’re a latecomer to these sites like I am or wondering how to integrate social media marketing and entrepreneurship, join me as I explore Twitter and share with you what I learned in my first 7 days on Twitter and more importantly, the amazing results I’m getting.

What is Twitter?
Twitter is a free service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

You’re limited by 160 characters and it’s like sending a short text or email or it’s also been called micro-blogging as your message is broadcast for everyone to read. If people find your ‘tweets’ interesting, then they start to follow you and what you have to say on Twitter.

Who’s on Twitter?
Your friends, customers, partners, competitors, all types of online PR and marketing experts and even Barack Obama, Lance Armstrong and Britney Spears. Okay, it’s not really President Obama, but he obviously has a savvy communications team who knew where the trends are and managed to get 250,000 followers on Twitter.

Can you imagine having a mailing list of 250,000 people just waiting to hear from you?

How Does it Work?
Just sign up for free, and here are a few suggestions to get you started:

1. Find a Twitter Mentor – someone who knows their way around and tweets about a subject you’re interested in. Follow them and model their behavior on Twitter.

2. Use TweetDeck – you’ll start to get overwhelmed by people you have clicked to follow and it’s a great add on to see at a glance posts that you want to follow, replies to you, direct messages to you and so forth.

3. Get your profile up – besides your tweets, people click on your profile to see if they want to follow you.

4. Learn the lingo and etiquette – DM means direct email me, RT means re-tweet when you want to send out something someone already wrote about and give them credit for it, hash tags like #blissdom or #winetasting are a way to find groupings on a subject.

5. Have something valuable to say – I follow quite a few mompreneurs and frankly, I do not want to read 12 consecutive posts on what they are having for dinner. It makes me wonder if they are having dinner, or just tweeting about it! I use Twitter to learn about new ideas, share my ideas on getting PR or what it’s like to be an entrepreneur mom and yes, market my businesses while sharing a personal side to me as well.

If LinkedIn shows your business side, and Facebook shows a more personal side, Twitter allows you to combine both and see multiple facets of a person. It’s also a great way to follow and learn from people that are otherwise ‘unreachable’ by email or phone.

My 7 Day Results:
In 7 days and about 30 Twitter posts, I had a mere 60 followers or so. Doesn’t seem like a lot compared to Obama, but here’s what else came about:

-A Joint Venture possibility with one of the largest and most established mom groups out there
-An Affiliate Marketing partnership with a product mompreneurs are looking for
-A PR client that inquired and then signed up with us for a project
-Sales of my how to do PR ebook
-An inquiry for an interview with Forbes Magazine (so far it hasn’t come to fruition, but I’m just jazzed that it even came my way)
-Most importantly, IDEAS, IDEAS, IDEAS. Those are just priceless, aren’t they?

If you’re a bit stuck in marketing your business, take a look around Twitter and see what (and who) you find.

4 Types of Headlines That Will Get Media Attention

Great Headlines Can Help Get PR for Your Business

When you’re writing press releases or pitches to help get your existing, or new business PR, always start with the headline first. It helps keep you focused on the ONE point you may want to get across and then content should flow from there.

Reporters are so busy, receiving hundreds of emails, voicemails and requests for their time that a headline has to grab attention in order for you to get PR. The first thing they see is the headline – so the 10 seconds it takes to glance at the headline is the deciding factor whether they will read your pitch further or throw it in the trash.

I’ll tackle other types of headlines in future posts, but in the meantime, here are four headline ideas for pitching a reporter on your business:

1. News Headline – to be effective, this actually has to be news! Examples are when you first launched your company or new product, awards for your company, and major company milestones.

  • MonthlySocks.com offers North America its first socks-by-mail subscription service
  • Babyclothing company launches spring clothing line only in the color green
  • Elena Verlee awarded World Entrepreneur of the Year Award (hey, I can dream can’t I?)

2. How to Headline – the basic premise of this type of headline is that you are going to teach someone how to do something. You can make it even more appealing by using a structure such as “How to (Do this task) That (will give you this benefit).

  • How to Get Your Kids to Read One Grade Level Higher
  • How to Choose A Baby Carrier That Reduces Back and Shoulder Strain
  • How Be a Thought Leader in a Crowded Marketplace

3. Question Headline – for this to work, it must be a question that the reporter’s audience (and therefore your target market) would really like to see answered.

  • Would you (or your readers) like to get $1,000 worth of bike products for free?
  • Do employers really know what moms are looking for in the workplace? (this is the result of a survey, which can be an effective PR tactic especially for start up businesses in a crowded marketplace)
  • What are the top 5 business models for online businesses?

The last example combines a question and my favorite type of headline…

4. List Headline – who doesn’t love a top 10 list? This type of headline lists a number of reasons, ways or secrets where you make a specific promise to the reporter of what to expect if they read on. It also has the promise of communicating information that comes in bite-sized chunks.

  • Top 20 Products that Soothe a Screaming, High-Needs or Colicky Baby
  • The 10 Must-Do “Date-Nights” for Families
  • 8 Lessons from a Life Coach

Another example of course, is the title of this post…

Remember, as with anything, if you do nothing…you get nothing. So take a few minutes now (yes, now) and brainstorm the types of headlines above that you can tailor to your business. Send a pitch today!

Since I am new to blogging, I’d sure appreciate a comment to let me know if you found this useful. Or, let me know what topic you would like me to address for you in a future post.
