Facebook Like pictureBy now there is no doubting the power of Facebook. With over 800 million users and over 50% of those users logging onto Facebook on any given day, it is absolutely necessary for you to have a presence on this social network if you own a business. A Facebook Fan Page is, to simply put it, your business’ website in Facebook form.

There are tons of ways to customize your page to fit your needs (there is a Facebook App for nearly everything), contain all your business information, and target your ideal customer.

Of course, the real challenge will be in trying to get even just 1% of those 800 million possible customers to come across your Facebook page and “Like” you. Once they’ve liked you, you will have a better chance of gaining their interest in your business as your updates will regularly show up on their newsfeed, you’ll be able to message them when you launch new products, engage with them better, and so forth. You’ve probably heard by now that having a blog is a great way to boost your company’s online visibility and drive traffic to your website. When you blog regularly and post about something other than what you had for lunch, you build a community of fans and followers who will happily return again and again to learn from you and your business.

But do you know how to leverage your blog posts to get your company more media attention?

When you don’t have anything newsworthy to say about your company, your blog may be all you need to get your business some buzz or at the very least, keep you on a journalist’s top of mind. Read More→

Making a Case for YouTube

YouTube logoChances are if you do your own PR, you already know that social media is an important, even essential, component of your toolbox. You probably have the usual suspects in your arsenal- Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn- but what about YouTube? If you’re not already taking advantage of this video sharing site, these are a few reasons you should think about using it:

  • YouTube gets 790 million unique viewers per month and 100 billion page views per month. That’s a huge audience that may end up viewing your videos, visiting your website and calling to hire you for your services.
  • Social media is first and foremost about showing the human side of your business. When it comes to the online world, nothing is more human and personal than video.
  • It’s a unique and, again, more human way to connect with journalists and introduce them to your company, new services, etc.

I’m guilty of underutilizing this channel myself, but with stats like these, the power of YouTube definitely can’t be denied.

Stand Out and Get Liked Online

Vancouver Canucks Green Men stand out in a crowdIn past social media workshops I’ve taught, the most popular questions I get are usually along these lines:

How do I get more followers?

How do I get more people to like me?

What can I do to get more eyes watching my videos?

While there isn’t really a magic formula to getting “liked” online, it’s important to never forget that just because more business is being done virtually doesn’t mean that the old rules of marketing and selling no longer apply.

I look at my newsfeeds and see too many people who just push out information robotically, expecting this to be enough to get them liked. Now more than ever, you should never underestimate the power of human touch in engaging people.

Think about it this way: Read More→

How to avoid being a #hashtagfail

The internet was abuzz last week over the latest hashtag fail: Entenmann’s, an American baked goods company, committed a Twitter faux pas when it decided to use the right hashtag at the wrong time:

As #notguilty was a trending hashtag being used in direct relation to the Casey Anthony trial, Entenmann’s landed itself in a PR firestorm after this tweet. The company has since apologized and claimed the hashtag use was unintentional; however, many accused Entenmann’s of taking advantage of a serious situation to advertise its products. Only time will tell how badly this tweet will affect Entenmann’s. Read More→

Social Media for Marketing Beginners

The other day, a Twitter friend asked me if social networking was just a time suck. I replied, “Only if you’re doing it without a strategy.”

Have you?

My recent articles about using social media as a marketing tool show that by using social media strategically for online PR, you can see a measurable impact on your business. In fact, I attribute a five-figure increase to my 2009 bottom line to social media alone.

I’ve also given away a free report and video, which are enough for social media marketing newbies to start getting positive results without spending hours in social networks.

However, these are just the tip of the iceberg. Read More→

My Year On Social Media (Lessons Learned)

Lessons learned on Social Media.

I’m a social media newbie. I’m not an expert, I’m not a guru, I’m not a leading authority. I wouldn’t even say I’m a blogger.

Having been a publicist (and often getting sidetracked with my own entrepreneurial ventures) for more than 18 years, last year I launched PR in Your Pajamas with the goal of helping entrepreneurs get the kind of publicity in newspapers and magazines usually reserved for corporate clients who can afford hefty retainers.

In other words, helping small biz clients get publicity in what you would call “traditional” or “offline” media. Very quickly, I got immersed in social media, which I consider to be an extension of “online PR”. Read More→

How Social Media = Online PR

In a recent post I talked about the difference between offline and online PR for small businesses. Just to take it a step further, I think of Social Media as Online PR because at the end of the day, social media is a means of establishing your brand and getting buzz for your business.

In creating a PR campaign, you need to determine your key messages and your key audiences, you need to prepare a way to communicate your message (writing a press release, media pitch or media kit), you need to pitch the media and then track what the media is saying about your company.

It’s the same with Social Media Read More→
