A Twitter List is a great tool for relationship building that allows you to group together people you follow, so that you can easily track what they’re up to. You can also choose to keep your list private or public, with the latter option allowing others to follow your list.
The number one advantage of creating a Twitter List is convenience. Imagine getting to follow all your favorite bloggers in one stream without having to sift through the tweets of all the other people you follow!
However, not many people are taking advantage of this convenience to build up their public relations efforts. Here are a few ways that Twitter Lists can help you:
Media Monitoring
Create a list of the media you’d like to cover you, so that you can easily follow what they’re saying and quickly jump into the conversation to answer a question or help them out. You’ll see that media ask for story ideas or sources to interview for their stories from their Twitter community.
Market Research
Create a list of your top blog commenters or people who fit your target demographic. Take note of what interests them, what problems they currently have and the products or blogs that they recommend. You can then adapt your own offerings, whether it’s a product or blog post, to what your audience is saying they want and need.
Share the Love
Feature reporters, clients, and your niche influencers on a public list like “Top 20 Innovative Minds” or “15 Tech Reporters You Need to Follow” and then, tweet this list to these people. They’ll appreciate the recognition and you’ll stand out to them even more. For example, I created a list called “20 Men Entrepreneurs to Follow on Twitter” that generated a lot of buzz for my blog. Just make sure your hosting service can handle the traffic you’re going to get!
Keep an Eye on the Competition
Use private lists to monitor your competition’s conversations and learn from what they’re talking about. Again, you may be able to glean some helpful information for your business based on what you learn.
I’d love to know what other ways you use your Twitter Lists to boost your PR. Leave a comment below or send me a message on Twitter or Facebook.

Awesome Elena,
Twitter lists are such an underutilized feature. Makes life simpler and makes Twitter 10 times more bearable. Especially when there are a zillion tweets flying on the stream.
Lists can be used in so many different ways it’s crazy!

This is a great idea as lists will help me sort out tweets into different sectors. I have clients and friends on my twitter account and this will help me keep them separate.
